Leak Detection

The wasserleser includes a leak detection feature that alerts you when water flows continuously for longer than expected. This helps identify leaks, running toilets, or forgotten taps.

How Leak Detection Works

The wasserleser monitors water flow continuously. If water flows without interruption for longer than your specified time threshold, you'll receive an alert notification.

Setting Up Leak Detection

Access Settings

  1. Open the stromleser app
  2. Select your wasserleser device
  3. Tap the gear icon (⚙️) in the top right
  4. Navigate to Leak Detection settings

Configure Time Threshold

Set the duration after which you want to be alerted:

Example thresholds:

  • 30 minutes: For quick alerts (detects short leaks, but may alert during baths)
  • 2 hours: Balanced setting for most households
  • 4 hours: Only alerts for major continuous flow

Choose based on your typical water usage patterns.

Timer Function

In addition to leak detection, you can set up the timer function to monitor water consumption:

Usage Alerts

Set warnings based on:

  • Time: Alert after water flows for X minutes/hours
  • Volume: Alert after X liters/cubic meters consumed

This is useful for:

  • Monitoring specific appliances (dishwasher, washing machine)
  • Controlling garden watering duration
  • Tracking pool filling
  • Budget management

Accessing Timer Function

  1. Open device settings in the app
  2. Select Timer Function
  3. Configure your preferred thresholds
  4. Enable notifications

Understanding Notifications

When leak detection or timer thresholds are exceeded, you'll receive:

  • Push notification on your smartphone
  • In-app alert with details about the event
  • Timestamp showing when continuous flow started

Common Leak Detection Scenarios

True Leaks

  • Dripping faucets
  • Running toilets
  • Pipe leaks
  • Faulty appliance connections

False Alerts (Normal Usage)

  • Long showers or baths
  • Washing machines with long cycles
  • Garden watering
  • Pool filling
Adjusting Sensitivity

If you receive frequent false alerts, increase the time threshold. If you're concerned about missing leaks, decrease it.

Taking Action

When you receive a leak alert:

  1. Check all water sources in your home
  2. Inspect visible plumbing for drips or moisture
  3. Listen for running water in toilets and pipes
  4. Check water meter to confirm if water is still flowing
  5. Turn off main water supply if you find a serious leak
  6. Contact a plumber if you cannot locate the source

Monitoring Consumption

Use the app to:

  • View real-time water flow
  • Check historical consumption patterns
  • Identify unusual usage spikes
  • Compare daily/weekly/monthly usage

Benefits of Leak Detection

  • Cost savings: Catch leaks before they cause high bills
  • Water conservation: Prevent unnecessary water waste
  • Property protection: Detect issues before water damage occurs
  • Peace of mind: Monitor usage while away from home

For general notification settings, see Notifications.

Troubleshooting

Not receiving alerts:

  • Check notification settings in the app
  • Verify your smartphone allows app notifications
  • Ensure the time threshold is set appropriately

Too many false alerts:

  • Increase the time threshold
  • Review your typical water usage patterns
  • Consider your household's specific needs
