Offline mode (no cloud)
The stromleser.one can be used in both ways- integration with Cloud and locally without Cloud as well. This feature facilitates all the users who use home automation and other mqtt based smart home systems.
In offline mode:
- the stromleser.one continues to send readings locally via MQTT (e.g. to Home Assistant).
- the local web interface remains accessible via the device IP in your home network.
- the local API stays available.
- no data is sent to the cloud.
Offline mode is best suited for instances when you do not need a cloud history and when you want access to the readings through Home Assistant.
Prerequisites
Before enabling offline mode, you should:
- set up the stromleser.one normally using the app (including the initial cloud connection).
- have the stromleser.one connected to your MQTT broker / Home Assistant.
- know the IP address of your stromleser.one in your home network.
- e.g. from your router's device list or from the app
What still works in offline mode?
Even without cloud connection, the stromleser.one continues to run and provide data in the following ways:
MQTT / Home Assistant
All readings are still sent locally via MQTT. Your Home Assistant (or other MQTT‑based system) can receive and record these values as usual.
Local web interface
The web UI at http://<stromleser-one-ip>/ remains fully accessible. Here you can, for example, use Recalibrate Total & Multiplier to adjust the counter value and multiplier.
Local API
The stromleser.one local API stays available and can still be queried from your network.
What no longer works?
When the cloud connection is disabled, the following no longer works:
No cloud history
- The energieleser app will no longer have cloud‑based data history.
- You need to record the history yourself, e.g. in Home Assistant.
Limited app usage
- While on your home Wi‑Fi you often still see the last known value on the app,
but when you leave the Wi‑Fi, values are no longer updated. - The online indicator disappears in the app.
No OTA updates
- Firmware updates via the cloud are not possible in offline mode.
- To update the device, temporarily re‑enable the cloud connection.
Possible total rollback after power loss
- The web interface shows a note:
If power is cut off, the total may fall back to an older value due to limited memory on the device. The backup is saved periodically, not on every pulse.
- This means that after a prolonged power outage, the internally stored total reading may fall back to an older value.
After a longer power cut, compare the total shown in the web interface with the value on your physical energy meter. If necessary, correct the counter via Recalibrate Total & Multiplier.
Re‑enabling the cloud connection
You can switch back to normal cloud operation at any time. For detailed instructions, see the Re-enable cloud connection page.
Best practices for offline mode
-
Use it only if you have your own logging system
- e.g. Home Assistant with long‑term history.
-
Regularly compare meter readings
- especially after power outages.
-
Temporarily enable the cloud when needed
- e.g. for firmware updates or when you want to use the app with full functionality again.
With this setup you get the best of both worlds:
Local control and data ownership via Home Assistant / MQTT – with the option to re‑enable the cloud whenever you need it.
